Include Electronic Services in a Registry

18 January 2006

The University of Manchester

Objective

This event was an opportunity to find out how to include your electronic resource in a Service Registry.

Background

Service registries make it easier for other applications to discover and use available resources. The Information Environment Service Registry is a shared service funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). It is a registry of collections and services that are available within the JISC Information Environment. The IESR has been developed to make it easier to discover and use materials that will help learning, teaching and research. Including your resource within the IESR will advertise it to potential users.

Who was this workshop for?

This workshop was useful for anyone who maintains an electronic resource and wants to make sure that it an be found and accessed. The day was also aimed at people in these categories:

  • providers of electronic resources
  • those who manage information about electronic resources
  • anyone with a general interest in the description and promotion of these materials

Workshop Content

Members of the IESR project team described how IESR content might be used, the help that is available for completing and managing descriptions, and how to use the data editing interface. There was also a chance for attendees to feed their own requirements into the development plan for the IESR, for instance if there are particular needs that are not currently being met by the project.

A full programme is available. The event was free and lunch was provided.

After attending this event it was hoped that attendees:

  • were aware of the aims of the IESR
  • understood how inclusion of electronic resources in the IESR will promote their use
  • have had an opportunity to create descriptions of their resource(s) using the IESR data editing interface
  • had a chance to influence the future development of the IESR
