Collection: Subject (Local Keyword)
This property is: Optional.
Definition
A single concept (keyword or subject descriptor) that is the subject of the intellectual content of the collection, or of the items in the collection.
Examples
| Value | Language | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Cars | en-gb | A local keyword for the UK Census Datasets collection. A local keyword is used here as there is no British English term in the chosen controlled vocabulary (LCSH) for Cars. The equivalent term in LCSH, which is entered under Subject (LCSH), is Automobiles, which is American English. |
Guidelines
In addition to subject terms entered under the controlled vocabularies, a subject term may be used for a specific local keyword that is not in any controlled vocabulary. This is intended to be used only if the term is not found in the chosen controlled vocabulary.
Subject Indexing Policy
The term(s) entered do not need to fully describe the collection; the term(s) may describe only part of the collection.
If the collection is a catalogue, index or hierarchical finding aid, then the term(s) used for Subject describe the intellectual content of the collection the catalogue describes (not the intellectual content of the catalogue, index or hierarchical finding aid records themselves). For example, the Copac collection is a catalogue. Subject describes the intellectual content of the books, manuscripts etc described in Copac.
